February 10th, 2009

This morning at 10am UK time, the SpinVox judging panel assembled to review yesterday’s entries to..

The ‘FREE SPINVOX‘ Competition!

Three Judges = Three Entries = A Top Three

They are as follows:

So that’s a SpinVox Voicemail account to @pfig, @lovelychaos and @jclayville! :)

Guys, get in touch and I’ll tell what the next steps are – james dot whatley at SpinVox dot com

The Future of Online Video #Amp09

January 22nd, 2009

- Eye Eye -

Yesterday, SpinVox attended the first ‘Amplified‘ meetup of 2009: The Future of Online Video, (FOOV). Hosted at The Institute of Contemporary Arts, the event hoped to covere a wide range of topics including Online Video Advertising Models, User-Generated Content, Mobile Technologies and many, many more

I myself sat in on two sessions and helped out with a third:

Session 1:

Taking the advice of chief Amplifier, Toby Moores, I decided to join a group of people that I hardly knew at all and the four of us ended up talking about context-sensitive adverts on news reports.
For example – using online video, you wouldn’t really want to have crude pre-roll ads just before a feature on the situation in Gaza. However, maybe you *could* have some context click throughs to supporting the red-cross etc… There was input from someone from Reuters, an expert global linking/feeds and someone with a background in CSR programmes too. Great ideas from all.

Session 2:

This time round I joined the ‘Virtual Table’. Not a made-up place as the name portends, but in fact a very real table of people (just like Session 1) this time however, with a webcam (as pictured above) and mic focused upon the conversation. This setup allowed folk from all over the world to watch, listen and ultimately take part via a live-discussion/chatroom which enabled the viewers to offer in comments and questions to the table as the discussion went on.

This time round Toby, Mike and myself (amongst others – sorry, didn’t catch all the names!) talked about the future of online mash-ups… and how brands can build trust with their (sometimes already existing) communities. Examples in the film industry were referenced – such as The Dark Knight and the upcoming adaptation of The Watchmen. Allowing your community to take some content for free and allowing them to play with and use it under the ‘Creative Commons‘ (CC) licence can result in some fantastic bi-products.

The Die Hard Song‘ (link has some swearing) was used as great example of how a community can be embraced and built on if you just invest some trust in your fans; The 4th verse was added after Paramount saw the original and offered up the footage you see in the clip to help them finish it (after initally threatening to sue re copyright infringement). Fantastic stuff.

Session 3:

In this final session I took control of the chatroom that I mentioned above. Listening in to both conversations I fielded the questions from the discussion group and posed them to the members of the ‘Virtual Table’. It sounds like a boring job, but I can tell it was actually very, very exciting. Being the conduit from one actual place in the real world to a virtual place in the online world gave me a very real sense of turning the digital into the tangible. Making things *actually* real, so to speak.
With at one point 30 people across the globe tuning in and taking part, the table ended up taking questions from other cities around England as well as places as far reaching as Austrailia and the US.

Amazing stuff.

There is one question you might be asking yourself right now and that is:

“Why would SpinVox attend ‘The Future of Online Video’?”

That’s a very good question, that requires a very good answer.

All will be revealed very soon. In the meantime however, who here thinks releasing the SpinVox Mobsters under Creative Commons would be a good thing?! Hmm?!

I’d love to see what you guys would do with them :)

Answers to the usual address… ;)

Ciao for now.

The Tuttle Club: Come say Hi! :)

January 16th, 2009

If you haven’t heard, The London Social Media Cafe – aka The Tuttle Club – is now held at The Institute of Contemporary Arts every Friday morning from 10am through ’til 1pm.

SpinVox has been friends with The Tuttle Club since way back in May last year when we all sat down and chewed the fat around and about The Future of Voice

So if ever you want to come say “Hi” and maybe learn a little bit about SpinVox, what we do and where/how we do it etc… Why not come on down?

You can find us there most weeks (check the Wiki to make sure). We’re the quiet ones in the corner, beavering away into our laptops and giving out the odd SpinVox goodie or too…

Come have a coffee and a biscuit, we don’t bite :)

You think it’s cold here?

January 12th, 2009

You should thank your lucky stars you’re not hanging out with these guys!

That photo up there is taken from SouthPole2009, an expedition that set off on Boxing Day last year (only a couple of weeks ago now) which will see Matt Gaskill, 18, become the youngest person to have ever completed the journey!

And also, (in what is in fact yet another first), friends, family and supporters and of course, you too dear readers, will be able to follow Matt and Kevin Gaskell’s month-long progress via their blog at http://www.southpole2009.com. The blog features live updates from the team made using their awesome, gadget-tastic satellite phone – the only device with which they will be able to communicate with the outside world in the remote, frozen Antarctic…

That’s right, SPOKEN BLOG POSTS FROM THE SOUTH POLE!

Awesome.

There’s actually a very good reason as to why these two are undertaking such a harsh trip…  and we caught up with the Gaskills just before Christmas to find out more:

You can track the team’s progress over at http://www.southpole2009.com/

GOOD LUCK GUYS!

:)

The SpinVox Wishing Well!

December 12th, 2008

Pretty colours!

Hello one and all, I’ve got something VERY exciting to share with you…

Y’see, yesterday saw the unveiling of… Something we’ve been working on for some time now.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you…

The SpinVox Wishing Well!

Image via @TikiChris

- Image via TikiChris -

I know what you’re thinking… What the hell is that?!

THAT my friends, is the SpinVox Wishing Well, and it’s in London’s Covent Garden RIGHT NOW.

All throughout December (and a little bit into Januray) we’re inviting you to come call the dedicated local number 0207 818 0880 (or if you’re overseas +44 207 818 0880 – intl rates apply) and share your wishes for Christmas, New Year and beyond…

Once you’ve spoken your wish, SpinVox will convert it into text and project it across the inner walls of the structure you see above!

And, each new wish will heralded with an array of many different sounds and voices, filling Covent Garden’s East Piazza with a ‘dramatic soundscape’ unlike anything you’ll have ever heard before!

The tower itself officially opened yesterday and we threw a little luncheon nearby for some blogger-friends of ours, the photos from which are already up online along with a whole bunch of blog posts about how exciting this project really is… :D

Finally – if you’re unable to get to Covent Garden between now and Jan 5th ‘09 – NO FEAR!
The SpinVox Wishing Well also has a digital/online component which can be found at…

Yep.. You guessed it..

www.SpinVoxWishingWell.com

Enjoy and hey… HAPPY CHRISTMAS FOLKS!!

May all your wishes come true…

:)

SpinVox: Telling it like it is with MTV!

November 6th, 2008

Afternoon all!

You may have been wondering what we’ve been up to on Big Talk these past few days. What with our random pictures of puppets and rather provocative YouTube videos

Well today I can let you know that, after our successes over the Summer with MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation on “StandByWhatYouSay” we here at SpinVox have teamed up the guys again for a new project…

…and this time we’ve invited Lapeno, Ed and Merv from MTV’s Fur TV to help us promote sexual health amongst you young folk by “Telling It Like It Is“.

Here are the facts from the press release:

- ‘Telling It Like It Is` – www.tellingitlikeitis.tv – is a groundbreaking initiative that encourages young people to speak openly about sex, sexual health and HIV/AIDS

- Young people interact with the campaign via a website – www.tellingitlikeitis.tv – and via a dedicated telephone number to discuss issues relating to sex, sexual health and STIs.

- The campaign uses the SpinVox service to automatically convert voice messages into text that is then posted directly onto the site’s blog.

- The campaign, which marks the 10th anniversary of Staying Alive, will be launched through a series of television infomercials (please see the video link) that will debut during the MTV Europe Music Awards on November 6th

- The infomercials, fronted by Lapeno, Mervin and Ed, will cover issues relating to safe sex and the fact that `rubber rocks` – the use of condoms in ensuring sexual health.

- Topics will include the risks of sex without a condom, the embarrassment factor in buying them and whether they reduce sensitivity during sex

- Viewers who contribute to the Telling It Like It Is website will receive a Rubber Ring, a novel pledge ring that shows the wearer won’t have sex without a condom.

- The full list of campaign telephone numbers:

UK : 0151 266 7700

US: 1513 729 6417

Canada: 1416 628 8501

Spain: 3493 184 2078

Germany: 4921 123 7061072

France: 3317 666 0863

Ireland: 3531 657 1891

                  Brilliant.

Tonight, during the show, four videos, not too dissimilar from the one we posted recently, will be shown AT THE AWARDS (so tune in if you can) and you’ll see the Fur TV guys doing their thang…

And hey – while you’re at it – why not get over to the website and TELL IT LIKE IT IS!

                  WOO WOO!

                  And we’re back…

                  September 29th, 2008

You’re friendly neighbourhood Social Media SpinVox Chap reporting in… How goes it readers?

I’m just plugging back in after a whirlwind tour of spreading the SpinVox gospel far and wide – taking in Nokia’s Openlab in Helsinki, the Web 2.0 Expo in New York, the Blog World Expo in Las Vegas and finally ad:tech London in… er… London!

There’s lots to catch up on before I dive back into this blogging malarky – (including some more thoughts on the whole Hierarchy of Communication thing from a few weeks ago) – but first, just a few notes and learnings from my travels to lands afar…

First up – WOW! Just WOW!

I cannot express my happiness enough to find out how well respected SpinVox was any and everywhere I went. It completely humbled me at times; meandering up to a group of bloggers (what is the collective noun for bloggers? anyone know?) and introducing myself along the lines of “Hi, I’m James Whatley, from SpinVox”

I actually lost count of the amount of times I got back the following response: “SpinVox?! Cool! I love you guys!” ..or variations thereof.

                  Really, really made me smile!

One of the great things about embarking on such travels is that you finally get to put some faces to some of the names that you see bandied around daily on teh interwebz, I managed to say hi to a few of them too…

Big hellos to C T Moore, Matt Singley, Guy Kawasaki, Mark Burstiner, Brian Solis, Chrissie Brodigan, Brett Petersel, Gary Vaynerchuk and of course, one of my favourite peeps right now, Chris Brogan, (see below).

We clearly both have a love of great shirts…

As I mentioned – there’s a huge amount of correspondence I need to get through since returning. Spending nearly three weeks shaking hands with some of the best in the business can sure take it out of you!

Thanks to all, for making me (and SpinVox!) feel so darn welcome!

Watch this space – there’s more to follow soon…

                  JW.
