“Hello!” …from someone else.

July 17th, 2009

This week, while I’ve been off on my travels, we’ve had a young chap by the name of Ben Paine (picture above – say hello Ben) in and around the office helping out with whatever he can and trying to learn as much along the way.

The poor devil got lumped with me a few days back and, as part of his work experience/internship, I’ve asked him to put a blog post together outlining how he feels about his time here to date.

This is Ben’s first ever blog post and has taken the task very, very seriously – all comments and feedback is welcome… so without further ado,

Ben, over to you:

———————————————————–

Hi guys, I’m Ben :)

Over the past six months I’ve been putting significant effort (along with Jeff Wellstead, Lizzie Bewick and Nicola Jones) into securing a work experience placement for 2 weeks at “SpinVox” in Marlow.

Was it worth it??

Of course it’s been worth it; the people, the progress and the atmosphere inside the office make the experience something I will never forget. However the journey to and from is something I probably will forget.

To start with, let me put you in my shoes; you have never worked before (ever), you arrive in Marlow at 7.30 in the morning (nice and early), dressed in your finest suit ready to make your all important “first impressions”. You find a cafe (of which the high street is densely populated) buy a hot drink and a paper, and begin to calm yourself down.
Until it suddenly dawns on you that you are costing this business thousands of pounds- the time the staff take to show you what’s what, the work those staff can’t do because you need to be looked after, the time it takes the staff to sort out the inevitable problem you get yourself into during the first day. All this adds up to valuable money; of which any business cannot afford to lose, particularly during this economic climate.

The first part of this adventure, is meeting the team who will accompany you along your journey. Department by department, person by person, you rapidly appreciate the vast variety of people within this rather small office. You quickly come to the realisation that you will have a great time with some, others you may not enjoy your time with as much; everyone though does share one ambition in common; the strong desire to make sure you have a worthwhile two weeks.

Now you come to the part you might just feel like you have some experience at; the work. However you are soon proved wrong, your brain is flooded with new skills; using computers, designing PR boards and new filing systems. My first job did involve redesigning the PR board (which all of 200 Marlow based employees walk past daily) – clearly a very important job, not one to get wrong. But yes you guessed of course I got it wrong. I did however successfully dismantle the board, but selecting the most recent and relevant articles wasn’t quite so easy. I had somehow managed to mount all current articles from any digital and non- digital media about SpinVox – only then was I to realise there were far too many – explaining the “ shove everything up and see what it looks like” feel to the board.

Not what the PR team of the year were looking for; it was no longer their Pièce de résistance; it was now more in the category of visual pollution. Fortunately for me my second attempt, with more help from the department themselves, did however portray a positive, clear and consistent message- illustrating to me (and hopefully others) just how much positive media attention this business generates. Corr Blimeyy!!

Other jobs soon piled up thick and fast, occupying my precious time here. Some of which took my interest more than others. I accepted the jobs that no one wants, but has to do once in a while: filing invoices, photocopying, or even dashing out for the much desired (by most) “Starbucks run”.

These less enthralling jobs were soon forgotten as I found myself attempting more complex and brain engaging tasks; for example testing new software, internally refurbishing computers and finally discovering the power of “Twitter”, not only for individuals, but also for companies. The fact that digital PR (social media communications) is already crucial and that its importance will continue to grow, if businesses are to communicate successfully with their new increasing online audiences.
To you, these jobs may not seem any more enticing than photocopying or filing; but to a technology enthusiast like me, this was rapidly becoming heaven.

How lucky was I??

So, what about the team venturing through these harsh economic conditions, how were they coping with this new obstruction (that to them has just happened to suddenly arrive in their daily lives)?

Well from my observations, the answer would have to be brilliantly.

I found myself working in at least four different departments, adjusting my still overwhelmed mind to befriending anyone I happen to meet or talk to whilst working my way through daily assignments. Luckily I was successful in finding common ground with most, ranging from daily politics, to” The Ashes” or which celebrity you look like. This large group of people were providing me with “life experience” as well as work experience; of which I didn’t bargain for. Their willingness to interact with me has taught me so much more than just how to data cleanse or how to test software.

I have learned how to actively participate in a successful, progressive, working environment- not included under the “skills I have learned” section in my record book. Surely these attributes are infinitely more valuable than learning how to work a photocopier, or how to reorganize clothes racks.

So any downsides, any reason I possibly wouldn’t want to put myself in this situation again?

No. Not really. Only public transport defies me of a perfect work experience; mind you, public transport provides a constant irritation in most people’s daily lives. If I was a year older and could drive would not have to mention this but hey, everything has a catch, right?

Lastly then, to conclude, what have I, a 16 year old, who hasn’t previously been near this company, learned about this business, the way it functions, and where it’s going? If I were to give an honest answer it would be too much to write down.

If I had to compress then; I have seen clearly how this business has the finest, committed staff to make this business function as efficiently as possible, I can see how from being here two weeks, this business is quickly developing, growing globally and making the speech to text market its own and finally most importantly how the owners are showing unswerving faith in the troops, galvanising them into the forthcoming venture into the unknown.

SpinVox Rocks: The Friday Redux

May 1st, 2009

Revisiting a topic from early last week, ‘RiddlerMike‘ has just discovered the wonders of SpinVox Memo.
Mike writes:

“I’m having a bit of a slow day today… – …so I took the opportunity of being sat at my desk to try out SpinVox (http://www.spinvox.com) – and put simply, it’s brilliant. I can see so many uses for this (they’re primary ‘business’ is converting your voicemail into text and forwarding it to your mobile, which I can see a stack of uses for), but today was just about playing around with it.”

And play around with it he did…

Why not jump over and see how Mike got on with his experiments?

I did… and I left him a cheeky little SpinVox Hacker tip while I was there too.

Shh.. ;)

Lifehack: SpinVox & Evernote

April 3rd, 2009

A bit of Friday fun for you dear readers..

Given THE RECENT OPENING OF OUR API! – ahem – I thought I’d share this little nugget that I spotted this in my Twitter stream late last week.

SpinVox fan and all round nice guy, Nik Butler – aka @Loudmouthman – has this handy tip for using the rather awesome Evernote iPhone app in conjunction with the equally awesome (and free!) SpinVox Memo service.

Nik, over to you…

(needs sound)

How cool is THAT?! :D

Now imagine if you took evernote, combined it with audioboo (that’s that lovely piece of audio up there) and the threw the whole thing the SpinVox Create API Programme… Well, the mind boggles.
And actually, what are you waiting for?

Heh.

In the meantime, I’ve asked Nik if he wouldn’t mind authoring a guest post for Big Talk sometime in the near future. Hopefully he’ll go into this process in a bit more detail as well as tell us more about all the other ways he uses SpinVox throughout his life. He’s a very busy man, but as soon as it’s ready to go – I’ll post it up for your reading pleasure :)

And that’s about it for this week folks, a very busy one indeed…

If you have any interesting ways of using SpinVox that you’ve discovered then by all means mail them in and I’ll get them up on the blog – the address is, as ever – james dot whatley at spinvox dot com

Bon Weekend!

:)

Skype me up Baby!

March 3rd, 2009

As of 10am today (UK time) Skype users ALL OVER THE WORLD can have their voicemails converted into text via the magical wonder of SpinVox

WOOP WOOP!
:D

So if you’ve got Skype, (and if you haven’t, why the hell not?)

Why not get Get SpinVox Voicemail too?!

I’ve just been handed a copy of the global press release so, if you’d like some of the more finer details, read on…

“SpinVox, the global leader in voice to content messaging and Skype, announces the availability of voicemail to text conversion for all Skype Voicemail users today. SpinVox conveniently converts voice messages to text in English, Spanish, French and German. The messages are then sent by Skype as an SMS text directly to a designated mobile phone for users to read.

Skype users can now benefit from instant ‘visible voicemail’, and never miss those important calls from friends or colleagues when they are away from Skype. Recipients of converted voicemail messages can listen to the full voice message by either signing into Skype or by calling their Skype To Go number . As well as being able to receive voicemail as text via SpinVox, Skype users may choose instead to receive voicemail notification via SMS or for free by email.

It’s easy for Skype users to set up voicemail to text from their account page, by simply registering a mobile phone number. Each voicemail to text conversion will cost €0.20/£0.17/$0.25 plus the cost of sending an SMS at standard low Skype rates. Additional SMS charges – a maximum of 3 – may apply depending on the length of the voicemail message.

All payments are made fuss-free through Skype Credit. Users have a choice to set a limit on the number of voicemail conversions received per day and to receive messages from people only in their contact list to help them manage their Skype credit. An email notification will be sent if that limit is exceeded. For more information please visit http://www.skype.com/go/voicemail-to-text.”

Awesomeness!

We’ve been working on this deal with Skype for some time now and it’s great to finally help bring SpinVox Voicemail to the masses upon masses of Skype users all over the world!

Skype have just hit publish on their blog too…  So, as I said at the start…

Skype Me Up Baby! :D

The Future of Online Video #Amp09

January 22nd, 2009

- Eye Eye -

Yesterday, SpinVox attended the first ‘Amplified‘ meetup of 2009: The Future of Online Video, (FOOV). Hosted at The Institute of Contemporary Arts, the event hoped to covere a wide range of topics including Online Video Advertising Models, User-Generated Content, Mobile Technologies and many, many more

I myself sat in on two sessions and helped out with a third:

Session 1:

Taking the advice of chief Amplifier, Toby Moores, I decided to join a group of people that I hardly knew at all and the four of us ended up talking about context-sensitive adverts on news reports.
For example – using online video, you wouldn’t really want to have crude pre-roll ads just before a feature on the situation in Gaza. However, maybe you *could* have some context click throughs to supporting the red-cross etc… There was input from someone from Reuters, an expert global linking/feeds and someone with a background in CSR programmes too. Great ideas from all.

Session 2:

This time round I joined the ‘Virtual Table’. Not a made-up place as the name portends, but in fact a very real table of people (just like Session 1) this time however, with a webcam (as pictured above) and mic focused upon the conversation. This setup allowed folk from all over the world to watch, listen and ultimately take part via a live-discussion/chatroom which enabled the viewers to offer in comments and questions to the table as the discussion went on.

This time round Toby, Mike and myself (amongst others – sorry, didn’t catch all the names!) talked about the future of online mash-ups… and how brands can build trust with their (sometimes already existing) communities. Examples in the film industry were referenced – such as The Dark Knight and the upcoming adaptation of The Watchmen. Allowing your community to take some content for free and allowing them to play with and use it under the ‘Creative Commons‘ (CC) licence can result in some fantastic bi-products.

The Die Hard Song‘ (link has some swearing) was used as great example of how a community can be embraced and built on if you just invest some trust in your fans; The 4th verse was added after Paramount saw the original and offered up the footage you see in the clip to help them finish it (after initally threatening to sue re copyright infringement). Fantastic stuff.

Session 3:

In this final session I took control of the chatroom that I mentioned above. Listening in to both conversations I fielded the questions from the discussion group and posed them to the members of the ‘Virtual Table’. It sounds like a boring job, but I can tell it was actually very, very exciting. Being the conduit from one actual place in the real world to a virtual place in the online world gave me a very real sense of turning the digital into the tangible. Making things *actually* real, so to speak.
With at one point 30 people across the globe tuning in and taking part, the table ended up taking questions from other cities around England as well as places as far reaching as Austrailia and the US.

Amazing stuff.

There is one question you might be asking yourself right now and that is:

“Why would SpinVox attend ‘The Future of Online Video’?”

That’s a very good question, that requires a very good answer.

All will be revealed very soon. In the meantime however, who here thinks releasing the SpinVox Mobsters under Creative Commons would be a good thing?! Hmm?!

I’d love to see what you guys would do with them :)

Answers to the usual address… ;)

Ciao for now.

Givin’ it some Beef

October 13th, 2008

While Charlie Engle continues his trek across the US (last known location, Nebraska), back here in Blighty, Sir Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham starts his own marathon walk across the UK!

Beefy’s Great British Walk – Against Childhood Leukaemia

This year Sir Ian is walking across our great isle to raise funds for Leukaemia Research – passing through great British towns like Taunton, Windsor, Tunbridge Wells, Bury St Edmunds, Stratford-upon-Avon, Llandudno, Harrogate, Milngavie and Durham… aaaaaaaaand SpinVox’s own Gary Martin joined ‘Beefy’ on the Windsor stretch!

(That’s Gary up there on the left – with our Mobsters and of course, Sir Ian himself)

Nice one.

You can follow Sir Ian’s story over on his blog – where, funnily enough, he and his walking party have been live blogging through SpinVox… Nip over and check it out.

Me on the other hand? Well I’ve found myself trying to work out how many miles all these crazy people have been walking…

I mean, I’d hazard a guess that you could walk 51.5022 miles in a day, right? Which means…
Oh I don’t know. If I minus the nought, point one… carry the two, add the seven, divide by one and take the three.. er.. seven. Nope. Can’t do it. Rubbish.

Never mind.

Seriously though – Good luck to Sir Ian and his team and well done to Gary for taking part in the fund raising activities.

You make us proud dude!

:)
